But it also cautions us not to let our imaginations turn into desires that focus exclusively on the self as that becomes a central sin for one character later on. As such, it uses this unique structure to praise the values of reading, having an imagination, and never forgetting tales of the past. As is probably apparent, The Neverending Story is a story within a story. The novel also functions as an homage to persons who never relinquish their imaginations. But as a whole, the novel’s world-building is impressively massive and immersive. At times there can be too many characters, places, and creatures to keep track of, especially as the novel progresses. It’s a detailed world that seems redolent of Wonderland but isn’t a copy. Plot-wise, The Neverending Story, penned by German author Michael Ende, opens with Bastian Bux, an ordinary little boy who escapes bullies first by hiding in an old bookshop and later in his school’s attic with a pilfered tome. In the end, The Neverending Story is a self-aware traditional hero’s quest tale filled with whimsy and wonder that sometimes cares more about its inherent playfulness than it does adhering to a concrete plot. I had seen both films but was never really a fan however, I was intrigued enough to peruse the book. However, it wasn’t until many years later that I stumbled upon the fantasy novel itself.
